Weeds, Lettuce, and Tea

Did you know that your "weeds", your salads, and your native herbal tea are cousins? It's true! Dandelions (Taraxacum), Lettuce (Lactuca) , and Yarrow (Achillea) don't look like they belong together: one's an enthusiastic concrete lover, one's dinner, and one's a fuzzy, smelly herb. But they are all in the same plant family, Asteraceae, the sunflower/aster family. The family is one of the largest plant families on Earth, with over 32,000 species. Take a look at the flower of a dandelion or sunflower. What looks like a single "flower" is actually hundreds of tiny, individual flowers packed into a single head. In botany, we call this a "composite inflorescence". Each "petal" that you see is actually a tiny, complete flower. This is the defining trait of the family, and once you know to look for it, you'll spot it everywhere: chamomile, artichokes, chicory, and tarragon are all in Asteraceae! Why does this matter for your yard? Plants in the same family often share pest vulnerabilities, soil and water preferences, and bloom timings, so understanding what's related may help explain why certain plants thrive or struggle.
